WTF
WTF podcast, 2018. Joe Gunselman, Ray Carr, Dan Menningen, David Grayson, and Carmen Angelo (left to right).

ABOUT

Worst To First (or WTF for short) is a new, live podcast featuring Ray Carr.  WTF covers interesting topics in sports and entertainment, plus a cavalcade of local celebrities. The show is streamed live from Gunselman's Tavern in Fairview Park, OH. Great Lakes a Brewing Company has agreed to be the title sponsor for Worst To First. There are weekly GLBC giveaways, and a free raffle ticket with a chance to win the Grand Prize of Dinner for 4 and a private brewery tour at GLBC will be given to purchasers for every Great Lakes Brewing Company draft beer you buy at Gunselman's on any given Sunday during the NFL Season.

PODCAST HISTORY

WTF began as a Browns-centric broadcast featuring Carmen Angelo (executive oroducer, The Mike Trivisonno Show) and Ray Carr, long-time radio host and DJ.  Celebrity guests join the hosts each week. WTF started with the premise that the Cleveland Browns could go from the worst team in the AFC North to the best team in the division, pending a series of unfortunate events for the rest of the division AND actual elevated play from the most talented group of Brownies, at least on paper, since the Kardiac Kids of 1980. The show aired from 11AM-1PM (or two hours before game time) every Sunday.

Deanna Adams Testimonial

September 12, 2023

Ray Carr, Cleveland’s Own!

Deanna Adams

Greetings, fellow Cleveland Beat fans! If you’ve been following this page you know that a couple times a month, I am featuring a person, event, or topic that you might be interested in.

Just call me the messenger of good stuff. J

So today’s good stuff includes a guy some of you might not be aware of but if you’re into music, sports, and interesting fun facts, you really should know about him.

Let’s begin with this: The Ray Carr Show airs every Tuesday morning, 6 am to 9 am, on WCSB, 89.3 FM. You will thank me later for letting you know this.

Why?

If you ask Ray about his longstanding career as deejay, emcee and trivia host, the first thing he’ll mention is the joy he gets out of it. “I love what I do. Playing great music, interviewing fascinating people and getting them to share their own part in history and pop culture. It all helps preserve that snapshot into the past - and present,” says Ray, who graduated from Lakewood High in 1981.

Ray’s passion runs deep, not only for music of all genres, but also sports (he’s an active player in ice hockey, baseball, and pickleball)—and pretty much anything that makes a good story. Much like his heroes, Pete Franklin, the sports talk radio host, and legendary talk show host/sportscaster, Larry King, he has honed his own unique style that continually draws in new listeners.

“Pete and Larry were my biggest influences,” Ray says, “Once I started listening to them, I knew what I wanted to do the rest of my life.” And so, he majored in communications and sports management at Cleveland State University and began his own career as a mobile DJ before getting his radio start at WHK in 2002. In 2007, he got his own show at WCSB, where he has currently logged in approximately 1500 guests, and in 2022, received a “Favorite Radio Host” Cleveland Music Award.

“I wanted to be that guy that people listen to,” he says, “Whether it’s an interview with someone fascinating, or playing songs that will make people's day. I want them to have a good time listening to my show.”

The Ray Carr Show features in-depth, live interviews with an array of interesting guests for every interest, along with eclectic and rare music rarely heard on today’s radio. His co-host is Cindi Verbelun, who creates entertainment features and interesting stories on celebrities and notable people born on the day of the show.

As is clear with each program, Ray is a smart interviewer who knows what to ask a person, and often gets them to reveal things they hadn’t planned on. How? “By making them feel at ease,” he says. “It’s never a Q&A but more of a conversation that allows them to open up and tell us what we all really want to know.”

He’s done just that with celebrities such as Dave Davies from the Kinks, Al Jardine from the Beach Boys, Jerry Shirley from Humble Pie, Petula Clark (one of his personal favorites), John Sebastian from Lovin’ Spoonful, and Riverside High graduate, Dan O’Shannon, who went on be the executive producer for such TV hits as Cheers, Newhart, Frasier and Modern Family.

Oh, and also Tom Hanks. You all know that guy. “That was a big deal for me,” Ray says. “Not only because he’s accomplished so much, but he also lived for a time on the same street that I did. So there’s that connection.”

“I’m passionate about every show I do,” he adds. “I always do a lot of preparation because I, too, am genuinely interested in whatever and whoever I’m featuring that day.”

And he’s always on the lookout for interesting guests, so if you have something you’d like to share with him, or know someone who you feel deserves to be on his show, contact Ray at ray@raycarram.com. or call 216-244-5109.

Valley Forge Music Boosters Annual Duck Race Fundraiser

April 20, 2024

Ray has been our go-to emcee for the last few years. He is prompt, professional, and keeps the ship moving at the right speed! Our fundraising event has a lot of moving parts; a dinner, sidevoards, raffle baskets, racing...Ray calls it all (and then some)! He's continuously on his feet, hyping the crowd, and making sure everyone is having fun. I tell him every year, our even wouldn't be possible (or nearly as profitable) without his energy, enthusiasm, or expertise. 5 stars, always.

Hudson-Wise Foundation - Benefit For Luke

May 29, 2022

Ray,

Just wanted to take a minute to thank you for all your help in raising funds with the Hudson-Wise Foundation at The Music Box Supper club a few weeks back. With your help we were able to raise funds to help kids who compete in the Special Olympics with their every day expenses, and kids would not get a Christmas without your generosity, or people like you. Hudson-Wise Foundation helps children and adults with Autism and special needs live their lives to the fullest/ The local musicians who donated their music, and you donating your time to call-host the event made it another successful mission. Thanks again for your help, and for co-hosting our special event.

Lakewood High School Senior Citizens Dance

May 25, 2022

Good Afternoon Ray!

I just wanted to thank you for providing the music at our senior citizens dance last week. You were prompt, professional, and polite. I appreciate you listening to what were were looking for, and went above and beyond what we expected. We wanted music from the 1950s/60s/70s to appeal to our audience of people aged 65 plus. Not only did you provide a wonderful array of oldies to dance and listen to, your personality added to the music selection. You truly are a professional, and we couldn't have found anyone better. I'm looking forward to working with you again next year!

Valley Forge Music Boosters Annual Duck Race Fundraiser

May 2, 2022

We recently hired Ray Carr to return as the emcee for the Valley Forge Music Boosters annual Live Duck Race Fundraiser. It's our biggest fundraiser of the year and the proceeds benefit all students involved in band, choir, orchestra, and color guard at Valley Forge High School. We had 180 guests and volunteers in attendance, and every single personhad nothing but the highest praise for this team!

Ray did a wonderful job keeping our event running smoothly, which was quite a feat! We had sideboards, raffle baskets, 50/50 raffles, and of course, our duck races all going at the same time. Ray was able to coordinate and announce everything without missing a beat, and kept the crowd engaged and interested throughout the twists and turns of our 6 hour long event! His positive attitude and professionalism were appreciated, as was his humor and calm demeaner. We can't wait to ask him back for our event next year, and I highly recommend him for any and all of your event needs.

Celebration Of Cleveland Rock History

April 10, 2021

Ray Carr is the consummate professional and gives the best interviews. Anyone who has ever been interviewed by Ray knows what a privilege it is. He asks the right questions and always adds interesting anecdotes to the conversation.

When I was seeking a partner for my Celebration of Cleveland Rock History, he was first on my list because he knows his stuff, brings out the best with those he works with, and is very dependable - which is gold these days!

If you're looking for a fun and entertaining emcee for your event, this is the guy you want. He knows his music and keeps the party moving forward.

I'm honored to call this talented man a good friend and rock 'n' roll history partner!

Jog For Dogs

September 23, 2021

We heard about Ray through one of our volunteers who had seen him emcee another event she had atended. So we reached out, told Ray about our fundraising event and, as luck would have it, he was available.

Ray went so far as to come to the shelter, learn more about our organization, our goals for our fundraising event, and walk through what our expectations were. Throughout the many exchanges we had, both by e-mail and  phone, he was very amicable and enthusiastic, and even went so far as to have one of our representatives on his radio program to showcase the event.

On the day of the event he arrived (more than) on time, and was both parts the professional and “host with the most”. He was incredibly engaging with participants, walked around speaking with people, asking them about themselves (and their pups) and, despite a few hiccups (on our end), went with the flow. In fact, given his demeanor and the easy way that he adapted, outside of the team, I suspect participants didn’t even know things were amiss.

We would absolutely be delighted if he would come back and emcee our event again next year. Not only did we as a team love him, but unbeknownst to him, he received high praise from those in attendance as well.

Hello Ray,

I am writing to thank you for all the hard work and dedication you provided to our recent Duck Race fundraiser to benefit the Valley Forge High School music programs. You helped to raise over $5,000 for the music program.

This was your second year supporting our event. Your professionalism, and focus on our needs, was evident and well appreciated.

You took the time to understand all the components of our event, and stood out in promotion and keeping the mood light and enjoyable. I appreciate the way your set-up and tear-down was done in the background and without incident. The operation of the equipment was excellent. I appreciate the ability to share a wireless microphone  for some of the event communication.

Your continued promotion of “whats next.” throughout the evening kept everyone informed, and allowed the evening to progress in a well-organized fashion.

Lakewood Kiwanis Club

November 27, 2018

My old friend and fellow baseball coach came last Tuesday to visit and speak to the Lakewood Kiwanis Club at our weekly lunch meeting. Not only was Ray educational and entertaining, but he did a very good job of engaging the membership in light banter and gave witty answers to our many questions.  What a great experience it must have been to interview the multitude of guests he spoke of in his 30 minute PowerPoint presentation. As professional as Ray was, he stayed after our lunch meeting to socialize and continued to answer questions that the members continued to ask. Thanks Ray.

To anyone looking for an AMAZING DJ/Emcee, please consider Ray Carr!!  He was very thorough during the planning of my wedding. He thought of things I didn’t and was very accommodating when my daughter decided she wanted to sing a song for us at our reception. Ray is professional, affordable and, most importantly, makes you feel like you've known him for all your life. I highly recommend Him! The only thing you will regret, is not hiring him for your special event!  Thanks Ray so much for everything!!!

Duman-Ezell Wedding

August 18, 2018

We were recommended to Ray by a close friend of ours and we were SO HAPPY we did! Ray was absolutely excellent from song selection, preparedness, and his stellar professionalism. Just listen to this guy talk, you'll want that voice at your wedding as well! We met with Ray about a month before the wedding to review songs, first dances, proceeding, and requests. We were totally comfortable and confident having him at our wedding so we didn't need to worry about the music or announcements, it was time to for us sit back and relax. Ray was able to read the crowd and choose songs which incorporated our requests and were appropriate for the crowd (like if people were going strong on the dance floor or if many needed to catch a breath). Our guests all had a fantastic time! I would absolutely have Ray at our wedding or event again without hesitation, and I know you will too.

Dear Ray,

Thank you for being a part of one of the best days of our lives!! It was memorable and better than we could ever imagine, and we want to thank you for contributing to the day! Months later from our wedding family and friends are still talking about how great a time they had at our wedding and it's because of the great music you played along with great company. I don't recall a time that the dance floor wasnt occupied, because the music amd entertainment were perfect. Thank you for your entertainment and professionalism! We also want to let you know how much we appreciate you being flexible with last minute changes and add-ons, along with your willingness to make the night we wanted. It meant the world to have my sister play the flute during the reception, and I was so surprised with my sister's dance to the White Christmas Sister's song. We highly recommend your services to everyone and anyone who is looking for entertainment to fit everyone's taste and keep the party going.

Kubovcik Wedding

October 3, 2015

Ray,

First and foremost, my wife Erin and I want to Thank You so much for being a major part of making sure our wedding day was amazing! From our first meeting to discuss the music for the reception to the days prior to making sure we had everything squared away for audio during the celemony if it was to be outside (weather did not cooperate) and setups needed during the reception for introduction and toasts, nothing could have gone smoother. Your prefessionalism during every step and throughout the evening at our reception was top notch. Your attention to our desires and guidance of how the evening should flow was right on point. Without your direction through the night, our wedding reception couldn't have gone as great as it was! We definitely want to recommend you to anyone ever looking for a DJ for any event from wedding to charity, your on-stage presence in front of a large group of people was everything we expected for a great time! Again, Thank You, Ray, for being a key contribultor to an amazing day and evening we will never forget!

With Great Appreciation,

Chris & Erin Kubovcik

Ray,

Thank you! We had such a wonderful time. You were wonderful to work with - professional, timely, fun - you took our style and song choices into consideration and also were great at reading the crowd!

We had so much fun - dancing was one of my favorite parts. I especially loved when you announced everyone in the beginnig (that was a hit!) and also when you played my favorite song, "Happy" by Pharrell, and announced that it would make the bride happy if everyone danced to it :)

We had a great time and hope you did too!

Thanks for all your hard work and time. We felt blessed to have you!

Thanks!!!

Corrigan Wedding

August 22, 2015

Ray Carr was the best decision we could have made for our wedding. After making a few phone calls to local DJ services that advertise online and not being thrilled with the cost, my wife and I reached out to friends and family for advice. We were set up with Ray through my uncle, and it was the easiest relationship to start.

Ray was incredibly accommodating and thorough throughout the entire process leading up to our reception. From the first sit down we had with Ray it was clear he was the right choice. Ray really invested his time to make sure we were going to get exactly what we needed for our reception.

Making sure that we were on the same page with the schedule for the evening was very important to us, and Ray could not have done a better job. His timing with each event was impeccable. From our bridal party introduction, to the cake cutting, and keeping everyone, literally everyone, on the dance floor all night.

There was never a time through the whole process with Ray that we were uninformed, concerned about what was going to happen, or if the right music was going to be played. The consummate professional and absolute gentleman, I would recommend Ray for any event.

Thanks Ray!

Ohio District of the Lutheran Church

December 29, 2014

DJ Ray has been a welcome asset to our Youth Gatherings in the Ohio District of the Lutheran Church.  He provides up-to-date music for our young people's dancing enjoyment, all the while making sure that it's music that is respectable and appropriate for them.  He is professional and fun!  The dances at our events are much looked forward to and many of the youth take to the dance floor.  Ray adds the 'limbo', hoola hoop contests and more so that all can feel included in the fun.  We look no further for a dj for our event - annually we call Ray Carr - DJ Ray.

Blessings and joy!

Jenkins Wedding

November 8, 2014

My wife and I recently booked (DJ) Ray (Carr) for our wedding reception.  We could not have been happier with our decision to go with Ray.  Ray is thorough, reliable, and responsive, and helped us to get through the complicated process of picking the right times for events, general playlist/song suggestions, and a lot of great suggestions for songs for our bridal dances.  Ray was there to setup his equipment at the reception hall a day before the wedding, along with testing it out to make sure it was up to our satisfaction.

He did an amazing job at the event, and he was more than worth the price paid for his services.  We had nothing but compliments about Ray, and you will too.

Sincerely,

Al and Michelle Jenkins

Ray,

Thank you for the wonderful job you did at our wedding on October 18! We’ve gotten so many compliments on how awesome our DJ was &  what a fun time people had at the reception. The dance floor was never empty! You went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. We were so happy that you were able to play our slideshow of pictures during our first dance as a couple, the mother/son dance and father/daughter. It was such a relief to know that we had a professional DJ working for us. We didn’t have to worry about a thing during the reception! Thank you so much for everything Ray! It was definitely a night to remember! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for a DJ! Thanks again!!

Trella-Megas Wedding

September 19, 2014

Ray Carr was our first choice as master of ceremonies and DJ for our wedding reception! We have worked with Ray before with Cleveland’s Blondes vs. Brunettes women’s flag football fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association. The charisma, professionalism, experience, and personality he displays for the Blondes vs. Brunettes game as the announcer is a fan favorite, and I knew his skills would translate well to working as a DJ for our wedding reception.  Ray was very helpful and responsive in helping us craft a wedding reception that met our goal of being “different” than the traditional, formal, sit-down reception.  While Ray could certainly deliver on that standard approach, we wanted a reception that was more interactive, less stuffy without formal seating or meals and only hors d'oeuvre (essentially we wanted to throw a party with drinks, food, and dancing).

We had not ever attended a similar wedding reception that we wanted for ourselves, so the flow and format was a concern of ours going in – however, we met with Ray a few times at the reception location and via phone/email, and he helped us to build the best and most fun reception for us.  We recommend trying the “Shoe Game” and having Ray host it, as for many of our guests it was a highlight of their night with us (Google the “Shoe Game”).

Ray was also very good at playing music and changing the music to accommodate the mood of the attendees, so there was always healthy and fun energy.  We provided Ray with a list of songs that we definitely wanted, and songs to consider, and he worked them in.

Ray’s ability to ad-lib and play off the audience to make the night engaging is second to none, and I highly recommend him to anyone in need of a professional announcer or DJ for their event.  Thanks Ray!

On behalf of the Cleveland Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, thank you for generously volunteering your time and talents to serve as the play-by-play announcer, deejay and host of Cleveland’s Blondes vs. Brunettes (BvBCLE) women’s flag football game.  Since our inaugural game in 2012, it has been a privilege to have your professionalism, great follow-through and clever and crowd-pleasing humor as part of our event.

Every year the BvBCLE players, coaches and spectators give stellar reviews about the entertainment and excitement you add to our competitive game day atmosphere.  Our sponsors are also pleased with the verbal recognition you give them throughout the game.

Jenkins Wedding

April 26, 2014

My husband and I were married on April 26th, and we had the pleasure of having Ray Carr as our DJ. Ray was an absolute professional during our wedding planning experience. Not only did he guide us on typical wedding protocol, but he also offered tons of invaluable experience. It’s evident that his 30+ years in the wedding business are well-earned. Ray has a natural ability to read any crowd. I don’t think there was a time that the dance floor wasn’t filled with people! Ray was even playing tunes that inspired our crowd to lift the groom up joyously in a crowd-surfing spectacle.  He’s that good!

Ray also kept in close contact with us throughout our wedding planning experience, and did not leave a single detail untouched. In fact, there were several times Ray called to make sure we were on the same page with song choices, the order of events, and other fine minutiae I missed. When things did not go exactly as planned during our ceremony (they never do!), Ray was able to discreetly cover up our mistakes. Ray truly thinks on his feet, a crucial trait for a wedding DJ to possess.

Many of our guests also commented that we had the best music of any wedding they attended, which is a wonderful thing to hear. While we did supply Ray with a playlist, we also gave him free reign to play songs of his choosing. His collection of music is astounding, and his knowledge of all musical eras will easily accommodate all wedding couples and other events

Ray Carr comes highly recommended! His skills and expertise are unrivaled. He promised us an awesome wedding experience, and he definitely delivered. Bravo!

I just wanted to thank you for everything you did for our wedding reception on March 15th! The night went so smoothly, and that is mostly because of your great planning and organization! Brian and Carol Barrett Wedding

December 3, 2013

Ray,

I wanted to thank you for your DJ services that you performed for our wedding in October. When we were getting all the other things arranged for the wedding, it was calming to know that we had the music taken care of. When the day came, you were nothing but a professional. We were set up outside, and when it started to hail outside, I saw you bringing in your equipment and going with a backup plan you already had, and I didn’t even know you had this. It ended up being outside, and you were ready. From the time we entered the hall for the bridal introductions to the last song, it was all great. We supplied you with a request list and it was all played with great execution that only a pro could do. The wedding ended early on our part, and you made sure that the songs you played kept the crowd on the floor. It was the first wedding I have been to were the dance floor was never empty! And it was mine! The guests all wanted to know where we found you, and they were very impressed by your talent. Once again, thanks for your AWESOME SERVICE.

Alzheimer's Association Cleveland Area Chapter

July 16, 2013

Dear Ray,

Your generous donation of time and talent has helped to create a successful fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Cleveland Area Chapter.  It is a privilege to have you serve as our game day announcer, DJ and host for the Blondes vs. Brunettes women’s flag football game.  The players and coaches hone their fundraising and football skills prior to the much anticipated event day.  Once the big day arrives, they look to you to parallel the excitement on the field with your pre-game music to pump up the teams, player and coach introductions, play-by-play announcements, and color commentating.

Our sponsors are also pleased with the “on-air” recognition you give them throughout the game.  Your humor, coupled with your genuine care and concern about our cause, shines through everything you do, resulting in a fun and meaningful day for the participants, sponsors and fans alike.

We literally look to you to put on a one-man show from the press box!  We have a winning recipe for continued growth in game day attendance and revenue with your talents behind the microphone.  We look forward to having you back for the 3rd annual Blondes vs. Brunettes event.

With gratitude,

Sheryl Berman

Gentilli-Quinn Wedding

July 8, 2013

Dear Mr. Carr,

Sherie and I had a great time during our recent wedding reception. Having the opportunity to spend time with all our friends and family at the most special event of our lives was a fantastic experience. Everything went according to plan, and you were a vital part to that plan.

We had a great feeling about working with you after our initial meeting. Your immense knowledge of music, spanning several genres and time periods, is very impressive. Equally impressive is your large collection of music. Your knowledge and vast collection of music would be assets to any future events.

We would be more than willing to ask for your services for any of our future events that would require them. Not only were you responsive during the lead up to our wedding, you also did me a personal favor by getting me in touch with a contact of yours in a non-related matter. That personal touch was above and beyond our expectations. You actually care about helping your clients, and it shows.

You were a consummate professional. We cannot say enough concerning how pleased we were with your performance, and would highly recommend you to anybody.

Sincerely,

Brian P. Quinn

Rocky River High School

April 9, 2013

Ray Carr worked in the Athletic Office at Rocky River High School from January to April 2013. He did an outstanding job, and was always very thorough and punctual with his work. Ray was a consummate professional in his "public" duties as a basketball announcer for both our boys and girls basketball teams. He also served as an announcer for our Community College Challenge charitable game.

In addition to Ray's "public" duties, Ray did great work behind the scenes in the Athletic Department, where he was a great asset in helping to input and cross-check athletic schedules for the 2013-2014 school year. His work was very thorough, detail-oriented and accurate.

Lastly, Ray was given the task of evaluating our outdoor sound system in the stadium, and helping us find a solution to repair and improve the quality of our sound for our outdoor events. Ray worked with several contractors and found a very suitable, sustainable solution to repair and improve our outdoor environment.

Ray is a conscientious and hard worker. He helped make Rocky River Athletics better from his work.

Sincerely,

Mark Wagner

Lakewood High School Athletics

"I just want to take this opportunity to thank Ray for the Academy Award performance he put on at our Fourth Annual Al Gruss/Tony Dibiasio Early Bird Baseball Tournament. His sense of humor and short skits kept everyone in attendance on their toes and listening intensely to every word that came out of his mouth. His ability to keep the audience, of all ages young and old, involved was important to the success of our Tournament. He literally became one of the high points of the Tournament. He left all the baseball fans talking about the performance long after he had left. When you hire DJ Ray, you don't just get a deejay BUT an entire performance that keeps everyone at the event participating in all the activities that he provides."

Jerry Gruss

Lakewood Community Recreation & Education Department

"Ray has been our middle school football announcer for the past couple of years. Ray does an outstanding job as an announcer for the football program. He is very comfortable behind the microphone, and you can tell he has plenty of experience in this field. He does an excellent job of mixing music, play-by-plays and humor to entertain the spectators. I have heard nothing but high praise from the parents and coaches in regards to Ray's announcing. He keeps the audience involved by reading different trivia questions throughout the game. He also provides a prize to the spectator with the correct answer. I never have to worry if Ray will provide an entertaining game for everyone involved. He delivers every time."

Kurt S. Shoaff
Youth Athletics Manager

Lakewood High School

Ray has been providing outstanding volleyball play-by-play game analysis and entertainment to spectators at Lakewood High School athletic events for past four years. Ray is a perfectionist, always arriving early to set up and to ensure that the evening runs smoothly. Ray is also dependable and will let me know in advance if he is unable to be at the match. Each year, spectators from the Lakewood community, as well as from opposing schools, compliment me on Ray's energetic, smooth, and often humorous commentary. I personally have never seen a better sports announcer than Ray, and am thrilled that we have such a talent at Lakewood. His abilities make our matches even more exciting."
